Lore & Background
The Classis Pontica was first created by Nero around 57 CE. During the civil war of 68-69, the praefectus classis Anicetus initially supported Vitellius, then burned the fleet and fled to Caucasian Iberia, becoming a pirate. A new fleet was built by the Romans to suppress his revolt.
Reader's Guide
The Classis Pontica was significant as a permanent Roman naval force in the Black Sea, tasked with protecting the southern coast and coordinating with the Moesian fleet. Its history reflects the strategic importance of the Pontus Euxinus for Roman security, especially during the Crisis of the 3rd century when it faced barbarian invasions. The fleet's involvement in the Gothic invasions of 255-268, including the sack of Trapezounta and other cities, highlights its role in frontier defense. The fleet's organization, with a praefectus classis and subordinate officers, and its use of ships from the former kingdom of Thrace, illustrate the integration of local resources into Roman military structures. Its legacy includes the later creation of Legio I Pontica for coastal protection.
